Smart Homes

Via Forbes

Welcome back readers! Thought this week: When did everything become so high tech?! Our cars are like space ships with all of these buttons that it make it easier to do... well... everything! You can basically voice command anything these days. Let's just say we won't be surprised if they have a voice command "start" in the next few years. Anyways.....that leads us into our industry and the technology that we work with on the daily. You can literally set everything in your home on one system (i.e. lighting, audio, TV, thermostat, security, etc.). How crazy is that?!

One of the most known systems is called Nest. Nest can basically control everything in your home on one screen, and can even set it up to do things for you without you even having to do it or be there for that matter. It also gives you the ability to make sure your home is safe with cameras and security. Another similar product is the Ring Doorbell. It doesn't necessarily provide all of the "automation" elements that Nest does, but it's a really great option for those who just want a little extra security.

"Alexa this, Echo that"..... We can actually tell a little machine to do something for us??? We're impressed but we'll be more impressed when Alexa can start doing laundry and cleaning the house. In all seriousness though, all of these different systems that we can tell to set a reminder, or play our favorite music, or call someone & the list goes on... are simplifying our lives to the point of it being slightly alarming! There is a huge push to satisfy the "instant gratification" we all desire. But to be fair- it's so much easier for those with busier lives and are always on the go.

We are definitely seeing more homes move in the direction of the "Smart Home" which we are all for. What it means for a designer... less clutter- technology can be hidden! It can be in a completely different part of the home and controlled by an ipad or iphone. There are no remotes all over the place nor do we have stacks of machines in each room. It allows us to be as creative as we want with out the old requirements of needing equipment in each space. There are some really amazing things that can be done with home automation and we think it's one of the coolest things ever. It also adds to the whole modern vibe.

Would you guys turn your home into a "Smart Home"? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments or over on our Instagram @naomiewertinteriors! We would love to hear your thoughts and let us know what else you'd like to learn more about here on the blog. Until next time....
