Keep Calm and Accessorize

Can we just talk about how important accessories are?! Whether it’s a kitchen countertop, a sofa, or a coffee table, there’s always room for some more color or another item to fill some empty space. Accessories are pretty much a staple anywhere. However, it’s easy to get carried away when accessorizing, but you don’t want to over-do it and make it look cluttered. Accessorizing can be a little intimidating or overwhelming, but keep calm because here are 3 tips!

#1 Rule of Three

When putting together a cluster of anything, it’s usually a rule of thumb to decorate in odd numbers, but more specifically the "rule of three". For example, if there’s an awkward corner or maybe a table that needs a little something, throw in some candlesticks or vases in a quantity of three and stagger them. Or just pick three staple pieces you love! If it’s all the same type of accessory, make sure to differentiate the height in some way or another as well. This rule applies to pretty much anything, throw pillows in a corner of a large sofa, shelving, coffee tables, etc.

#2 Color & Texture

As many of us know neutrals are totally in right now, which can actually make it easier or harder to pick the right accessories. The downside is that this is where it may become overwhelming. However on the bright side, there are so many different colors and textures to experiment with! At this point it’s mainly just a matter of what mood you want to set or what kind of look you’re going for. If there’s a lot of flat fabrics or surfaces, texture can add a lot to a space and is usually done through accessorizing. Don’t let anything intimidate you and have fun with it!

#3 Keep it to Scale

This is SUCH a common mistake. If there is a super large space to fill, it should be accessorized with larger items. The same goes for smaller areas. We can’t stress enough how much scale can alter the appearance of a space, not just with accessories but with all aspects of design. If there’s a large space with small items it’s going to swallow the items and look disproportionate.

We hope those 3 tips give a little insight to accessorizing. There are a crazy amount of home decor stores that have an endless variety of accessories. Like we said, it’s something that should be fun and ultimately a way to express yourself.
