It's Earth day, so we thought we would share some easy steps that you can take to make your home a little more eco-friendly. Of course there are countless ways to live in an environmentally conscious home however, you would be here all day reading about each one. So we have chosen three that are realistic and attainable without changing the style or comfort of your home.
Less Water Waste for All
Toilets, although not the most glamorous item to discuss, are one of the most used plumbing fixtures in a home. Meaning that it is the No. 1 water guzzler, one of the "thirstiest" fixtures and estimated to be responsible for upwards of 30% of household water consumption. Switching to Dual Flush toilets allow homeowners to be more mindful of their water consumption. And if you're up for a cleaner, more modern approach try wall hung! C'mon... everyone is doing it.
Let's go LED!
If you haven't already it's about time to change all of your incandescent lightbulbs to LED bulbs! LED bulbs are more efficient and longer lasting, as well as more durable than your previous standard bulbs. Save money and cut CO2 emissions. Win- Win! We love using LED light bulbs in our clients homes. They can be used in almost every light fixture from fancy chandeliers to single light sconces.
Accent Wood
Reclaimed wood has been all the rage for quite some time now. Using reclaimed or repurposed wood is not only a trend but also an eco-friendly way to add some character to a space. With rough edges and natural textures, you can create the perfect accent wall or you can engineer an amazing industrial dining room table. Reclaimed wood is a more durable product and provides a more aesthetically pleasing look that requires little maintenance, compared to that of particle board, that may release dangerous gases into your home.
We hope this post has encouraged you to take a step back and think of what you can do to make your home a little more eco- friendly. As we continue to design homes here at NWI this is one thing that we will continue to do, by keeping ourselves educated with new sustainable technology and continue to implement eco-friendly products in each space.
